The Detroit Lions finally have some things going for them in 2010. Unfortunately, when you only win a total of 2 games in 2008 and 2009, the climb back is gargantuan.
Everyone in Detroit knows the story a historically bad 2008 season where they went winless (only team ever to go 0-16) followed by a marginally better 2009 season where they won a whopping 2 games. This team is bad, ridiculously bad. But amid the train-wreck are a few shiny areas that, given the right cultivation, might produce some surprises in the next few years.
The Lions fortunes for 2010 and beyond rest on the young shoulders of quarterback Matthew Stafford. Taken first overall in the 2009 NFL draft, Stafford showed some promise in 2009. He made many mistakes as most rookie quarterbacks do, but played pretty solidly overall. He threw 20 interceptions and had a pretty bad 53 percent completion rate. Some of that can be attributed to the Lions lack of decent receivers. Calvin Johnson is terrific, but hes about all they had. When opposing teams can double up on your only real downfield option, you are going to have problems. Still, you just cannot throw 20 interceptions (in 10 games) and expect to be a winner. This year Matthew Stafford is going to have to be better and less injury prone. The Lions need him for more than just 10 games.
Expect Calvin Johnson to have a monster year. He is already one of the very best receivers in the league, and his size and strength combination is almost freakish. But the big difference between 2009 and 2010 is the addition of Nate Burleson to be the number 2 receiver. With the addition of Burleson the Lions finally have a second legitimate threat at receiver. Opposing teams will now have to think twice about double teaming Johnson. This should allow him to get open much more frequently.
Probably the worst area of the Detroit Lions is their defense. They ranked dead last among all NFL teams in total defense in 2009. But more troubling even than that is the fact that they allowed a whopping 60 more points than the second worst team in the league. When you are this utterly bad you have to figure that it is going to take multiple good drafts to get you anywhere near respectability. While many Detroiters blamed the cornerbacks and safeties for these horrid numbers, just remember that they can only effectively cover their men for so long before the protection breaks down.
Ndamukong Suh to the rescue! The Lions number two overall pick out of Nebraska should help immediately with the defense. Suh is a frightening physical specimen at 6 foot 4 inches and 307 pounds. At the NFL combines he overwhelmed the scouts with his freakish strength, speed and agility. If this guy can stay healthy and become the anchor of the offensive line as expected, his pressuring of the quarterback should immensely help the beleaguered defense.
The most the Lions can probably realistically hope for this year is to double their win total of 2009 from 2 to 4 games. This wont be enough to get them past 4th in the division, but it would show they are finally, hopefully headed in the right direction.
